The incident took place on November 5th, during the afternoon rush hour, on Interstate 80 near Greenback Lane. A CBS13 news crew present at the scene witnessed the aftermath of the shooting, with the suspect’s car, a 6-inch knife, and a damaged motorcycle strewn across the freeway. The newly released footage provides crucial context on how these pieces of evidence ended up scattered across the road.

The chase began near the Madison Avenue exit when law enforcement authorities attempted to pull over the driver for a traffic violation that had occurred at the Norwood Avenue exit. However, instead of complying, the driver chose to flee, initiating a high-speed pursuit. The chase came to a dramatic end when the suspect collided with a motorcyclist near Greenback Lane, with California Highway Patrol officers and Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies right on his tail.

The impact caused the suspect’s car to roll off onto the shoulder, resulting in debris being scattered across the lanes. Deputies quickly exited their vehicles, drawing their guns, and ordered the suspect to the ground. The video footage reveals the suspect brandishing a large knife while evading the officers. In response, one of the officers opened fire, shooting the suspect twice and bringing him down. However, the suspect managed to regain his footing and lunged towards the injured motorcyclist lying on the ground. Fearing for the motorcyclist’s safety, the officers fired an additional four shots, successfully incapacitating the suspect. Sadly, the suspect, identified as 36-year-old Zachary Wolffscott, did not survive his injuries and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

The motorcyclist involved in the incident sustained serious injuries but managed to survive. The sheriff’s deputy responsible for the shooting has been placed on paid leave pending an investigation into the incident, as per standard procedure.
