The victim, a 56-year-old woman, was immediately located by officers from the Ukiah Police Department. She had sustained injuries that were consistent with an assault involving an edged weapon.

Upon further investigation, it was revealed that the assault had taken place in the 1300 block of North State Street, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office. Consequently, deputies were called to the scene to take over the investigation.

The victim had been staying at the residence of the suspect, identified as Remelee Guerrero Laxa, a 51-year-old woman from Ukiah. The victim had been a guest at Laxa’s home for several days prior to the incident.

The attack on the victim was described as unprovoked, with Laxa allegedly using a utility knife commonly referred to as a ‘box cutter’. The victim suffered serious injuries as a result.

Upon arrival at Laxa’s residence, the deputies discovered evidence of a disturbance as well as signs of the assault. It was also revealed that Laxa was on formal probation in Mendocino County, with conditions that included obeying all laws and a search waiver.

Based on probable cause, the deputies arrested Laxa on charges of attempted murder and for violating her probation. She was subsequently booked into Mendocino County Jail and is being held without bail.

The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office expressed their gratitude to the Ukiah Police Department and the medical personnel who responded promptly to the call for assistance, ensuring that the victim received immediate medical attention.
