The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s office presented its first civilian life-saving award to honor the bravery and selflessness of Eddie Gerardo ‘Topollo’ Cervantes Lora. Lora tragically lost his life while attempting to rescue a woman and her five-year-old daughter from the San Joaquin River.

On October 10, Lora witnessed a vehicle veering off the road and plunging into the river near his home. Without hesitation, he jumped into action to save the lives of the mother and daughter. Lora successfully rescued the young girl and then courageously re-entered the water in search of the woman. Tragically, Lora made the ultimate sacrifice in his act of valor.

The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office recognized Lora’s heroic actions and presented the Life Saving Award to his family. This is the first time the office has bestowed this honor upon a civilian hero.

“Without hesitation, Topollo jumped into action, helping to rescue the five-year-old daughter,” said the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office in a statement. “After successfully rescuing the young girl, Topollo heroically re-entered the water in search of the woman, making the ultimate sacrifice in his act of valor.”

Lora’s family expressed their gratitude for the recognition and the support they have received from the community. They are proud of Lora’s selfless act and want his courage to be remembered as that of a true hero.

The tragic incident that claimed Lora’s life serves as a reminder of the dangers that can arise in emergency situations. It also highlights the importance of community members like Lora who are willing to risk their own lives to help others in need.
