The driver involved in a fatal traffic collision on Tuesday night in Indio has been identified as 53-year-old Martin Gutierrez of Indio, according to local authorities.

The unfortunate incident took place near the Fantasy Springs Resort and Casino on Indio Springs Parkway at approximately 9:45 p.m. It involved two vehicles, a white GMC pick-up truck, and a white Saturn sedan. Preliminary investigations suggest that alcohol or drug impairment may have played a role in the crash.

Emergency services swiftly responded to the scene, finding the vehicles in a head-on collision. Firefighters had to extricate the driver and passenger from the wreckage of the Saturn. However, despite their efforts, the driver of the Saturn succumbed to their injuries after being transported to a nearby hospital. The passenger from the Saturn also sustained significant injuries and was hospitalized.

Authorities have not released the identity of the deceased driver or the driver of the pick-up truck at this time. However, Benjamin Guitron, a spokesperson for the police, confirmed that the driver of the GMC pick-up truck exhibited signs of impairment either from drugs or alcohol. Consequently, the driver was taken into custody on suspicion of driving under the influence.

As a result of the accident, the affected section of Indio Springs Parkway remained closed throughout the night and morning hours for investigation purposes. However, it was reopened to traffic on Wednesday morning.
