HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – Houston police have released body camera and security footage of an officer being injured during a fatal shootout that took place earlier this month. The incident occurred on December 2nd when Sgt. Mauricio Valle was on the lookout for a burglary suspect in southwest Houston. According to the Houston Police Department (HPD), Valle was ambushed near Harwin Drive and Hillcroft Street.

Two suspicious individuals, Edwin Joey Villegas and an unidentified female, were spotted in the area following reports of burglaries. However, the officers lost sight of both suspects, prompting them to initiate a search.

Security footage from the incident reveals the moment Sgt. Valle pulled up behind a building at 7000 Harwin in an unmarked police vehicle. Meanwhile, Villegas, identified by HPD as the suspect, was seen hiding between a truck and a pile of pallets. As Valle parked his car, Villegas emerged from his hiding spot and fired shots into the sergeant’s vehicle.

In response, Sgt. Valle exited his car and exchanged gunfire with Villegas before collapsing to the ground. The suspect then ran around the building but also collapsed, as captured by the video. Body camera footage shows fellow HPD officers administering first aid to both the injured sergeant and the suspect.

Despite sustaining multiple gunshot wounds, Sgt. Valle remained conscious and urgently requested his colleagues to apply tourniquets to his arms and legs in the bodycam video. He was subsequently transported to the hospital where he received treatment for his injuries. Fortunately, he is expected to make a full recovery.

Officers at the scene also provided medical assistance to Villegas, performing chest compressions. However, paramedics later pronounced him dead.

The HPD has stated that the incident remains under investigation as they gather further evidence to determine the motive behind the ambush-style attack.
