ASHLAND — In the wake of Thursday’s tragic mass shooting incident, a GoFundMe page has been set up to assist with the medical expenses of the sole survivor, Brein Pena, as he continues his recovery journey.

The purpose of this crowdfunding campaign is to help alleviate the ongoing financial burden faced by Pena and his family, as they navigate the long-term costs associated with his medical treatment.

“Given the severity of his injuries, Brein will require extensive medical care even after his discharge from the hospital,” said Sarah Large, a close family friend who spearheaded the GoFundMe initiative.

Pena, aged 20, miraculously survived the shooting incident that claimed the lives of Autumn Bell, 19, who was reportedly pregnant; Alaria Bell, 16; and Christina Bell, 53.

Providing an update on Pena’s condition, Large mentioned that he is currently awake and in a stable state, with the ability to communicate with his loved ones. However, his journey towards full recovery is expected to be long and arduous.

“Brein will require additional surgeries and extensive follow-up care for the gunshot wounds he sustained,” explained Large. “The funds raised through this campaign will be crucial in covering these medical expenses and the costs associated with his surgeries.”

Describing Pena as a selfless individual who always goes above and beyond to help others, Large emphasized his strong bond with his family.

“He is an exceptional young man with a heart of gold, always ready to lend a helping hand,” she added.

Large expressed her hope that people would rally around Pena during this challenging time.

Currently residing in Florida, Large acknowledged her physical absence but affirmed that the GoFundMe campaign was her way of offering support to Pena and his family.

“I’m unable to be there in person to assist, so this is my attempt to make a difference,” she said. “My prayers are with him, and I genuinely hope his progress continues positively. We are unaware of the physical challenges he may face in the future.”

The incident unfolded on Thursday evening when deputies responded to a shooting report at the rural Ashland address of 308 Philadelphia Road around 8:30 p.m. Upon arrival, they discovered Pena with a gunshot wound, while Autumn Bell, who was also present, had tragically lost her life.

Providing valuable information, Pena, whose condition was listed as serious but stable on Monday, guided authorities to another location at 752 Lockard St., Lot 51, where the bodies of Christina Bell and Alaria Bell were found.

Subsequently, at approximately 9 p.m., Jacksonville police located the vehicle belonging to the suspect, 62-year-old Ronald L. Cobren, at the intersection of North Main and Oak streets. Tragically, Cobren was found deceased in the vehicle, having apparently taken his own life.
