Metro Police Solve 1979 Cold Case: Gwenn Marie Story Identified as Victim

Metro Police have made a major breakthrough in a decades-old cold case, announcing today that they have identified the woman found dead over four decades ago in a Las Vegas field. Through advanced DNA testing, the victim has been identified as Gwenn Marie Story, a 19-year-old woman originally from the Cincinnati area.

The discovery of Story’s remains dates back to the night of August 14, 1979, when a man stumbled upon her body while walking through an open field near Sahara Avenue and Las Vegas Boulevard. At the time, the Clark County Coroner’s office ruled her death as a homicide.

Despite extensive efforts, law enforcement was unable to find any identification for the victim, leading to her being named Sahara Sue Doe. The case was then assigned to Metro’s Cold Case Section, where it remained unsolved for decades.

In a significant breakthrough in September 2022, investigators were able to identify and contact possible family members of the victim. These family members willingly provided DNA samples for comparison, which ultimately led to the positive identification of the remains as Gwenn Marie Story on November 15, 2023, according to a press release by Metro Police.

Family members have revealed that Story had left the Cincinnati area in the summer of 1979, embarking on a journey to California in search of her biological father. Accompanied by two male friends, she never made it to her intended destination. The male friends returned to Ohio in August 1979, informing Story’s family that they had left her in the Las Vegas area.

Tragically, Story’s family never heard from her again after she had left Cincinnati, leaving them with unanswered questions and the pain of her disappearance. With the positive identification of Gwenn Marie Story, Metro Police are now appealing to the public for any information related to her or the two males she traveled with to Las Vegas.
