Detroit Police Officer Appears in Court for Alleged Manslaughter of 71-Year-Old Man
DETROIT – Juwan Marquise-Alexander Brown, a former Detroit police officer, made an appearance in court on Wednesday, Dec. 20, facing charges of manslaughter. Brown stands accused of causing the death of a 71-year-old man by allegedly punching him in the face. The court arraigned him and issued a personal bond of $100,000.
The incident leading to the charges took place on September 1 at the Garden Bowl, situated off Woodward Avenue. Brown responded to a call reporting a 71-year-old man who was causing a disturbance and refusing to leave the premises. According to prosecutors, a verbal altercation ensued between Brown and the victim, culminating in Brown striking the elderly man in the face. The force of the blow caused the victim to fall to the ground, striking his head.
Daryl Vance, the 71-year-old victim, was immediately taken to a hospital for treatment. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries nearly three weeks later, as determined by the medical examiner who concluded that blunt force trauma to the head was the cause of death.
Within days of the incident, Brown was suspended from duty by the Detroit Police Department after the matter came to light. Subsequently, he was terminated from his position. However, Brown is currently appealing the termination decision.
The court set a personal bond of $100,000 for Brown, allowing him temporary release while awaiting further legal proceedings.
The case has garnered significant public attention, raising concerns about the use of force by law enforcement officers. As the legal process unfolds, the community awaits justice and hopes for a fair trial that will provide clarity and closure in this tragic incident.
