Man Dead and RCMP Officer Injured in Officer-Involved Shooting on Red Earth Cree Nation


One individual has tragically lost their life and an officer from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has sustained injuries following an officer-involved shooting that occurred on the Red Earth Cree Nation in Saskatchewan.


The RCMP has confirmed that the injuries sustained by the officer are non-life threatening.

The incident unfolded in the early hours of Tuesday at approximately 3:40 AM when Carrot River RCMP received a report of gunshots on the Red Earth Cree Nation.


Responding officers swiftly apprehended two individuals in order to assess their involvement in the reported incident. As of now, no charges have been laid against these individuals, and this aspect of the investigation remains ongoing.


Shortly thereafter, a third person, identified as a 25-year-old male believed to be connected to the initial incident, was discovered in close proximity.


According to the RCMP, upon arrival at the scene, a firearm was discharged in the direction of the RCMP patrol vehicles. Subsequently, officers exited their vehicles, leading to a physical altercation.


\”During the altercation, firearms were discharged, resulting in injuries sustained by both the adult male suspect and one of the responding officers,\” stated the RCMP in a released statement.


Regrettably, the 25-year-old male was declared deceased at the scene by Emergency Medical Services (EMS).


In light of the incident, the Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) has been called in to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding the man’s death, as well as his interactions with the Saskatchewan RCMP.


The Red Earth Cree Nation is situated approximately 75 kilometres east of Nipawin.

Details of the Incident

Officers promptly responded to the call and apprehended two individuals for further investigation, as they were suspected of being involved in the reported incident. Tragically, both the suspect and one of the responding RCMP officers sustained injuries as a result of the altercation. Despite the efforts of Emergency Medical Services (EMS), the 25-year-old male was pronounced dead at the scene.
