Body Found in Las Vegas in 1979 Finally Identified as Gwenn Marie Story, a Teen from Cincinnati
After a cold case spanning several decades, authorities have finally identified the body of a teenage girl found in Las Vegas in 1979. The Clark County Coroner’s Office announced on Tuesday that the body belongs to Gwenn Marie Story, a 19-year-old from Cincinnati, Ohio.

The discovery of Story’s body occurred in August 1979 when a man stumbled upon it while walking through an open field in Las Vegas, where the El Rancho Vegas Hotel and Casino once stood. Police arrived at the scene and determined that she had been killed, classifying her death as a homicide after conducting an autopsy.
Initially, the victim remained unidentified and was given the name Sahara Sue Doe by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police. The case remained unsolved for years until investigators turned to forensic genetic genealogy in September 2022. Through this method, they were able to locate and contact potential family members who provided DNA samples for comparison.
On November 15, detectives working on the case received confirmation that Sahara Sue Doe had been positively identified as Gwenn Marie Story through DNA analysis.
Who was Gwenn Marie Story?
According to information obtained from her family members, 19-year-old Gwenn Marie Story left Cincinnati, Ohio, in the summer of 1979. She embarked on a journey to California in search of her biological father. Accompanying her were two male friends who later returned to Cincinnati, claiming they had left her in Las Vegas.

After her departure from Cincinnati, Story’s family never heard from her again.
