Christopher Chad Duncan found guilty of 2019 strangulation death of Justin William Cash

Christopher Chad Duncan, 38, was found guilty last week in the 2019 strangulation death of Justin William Cash, according to the office of Seventh Circuit Solicitor Barry Barnette.

The body of Justin Cash was recovered from the Broad River, and Duncan was subsequently arrested on August 16, 2019.

In his initial statement to Detective Brandon Gardner with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, Duncan claimed that Cash, who was allegedly under the influence, fell off his float and Duncan was unable to reach him to offer assistance. However, evidence presented during the trial revealed extensive bruising on Cash’s limbs and a broken hyoid bone, suggesting foul play.

Duncan then changed his statement, alleging that he had grabbed Cash and pulled him into a headlock in an attempt to assist him. However, evidence showed that Duncan did not seek help for Cash and lied about going to a nearby house for assistance. Testimony indicated that Duncan misled first responders about his location when he exited the river and where they should search for Cash.

Forensic pathologist Dr. Kelly Rose testified that the heavy bruising and scratches found on Cash’s arms and lower legs were inconsistent with an accidental fall. She also noted that Cash’s hyoid bone was fractured, which typically occurs in cases of strangulation.

Deputy Solicitor Kim Leskanic prosecuted Duncan, highlighting his dishonesty regarding his alleged attempts to save his friend. Circuit Court Judge R. Keith Kelly presided over the trial, which began on December 11 and concluded on December 15 with Duncan being sentenced to 40 years in prison for the murder of Justin Cash.

At the trial’s conclusion, Leskanic expressed gratitude to law enforcement, particularly Detective Brandon Gardner and Maj. Billy Anthony, for their diligent work in building a strong case against Duncan. She also acknowledged the resilience shown by Justin Cash’s family, who attended the trial and spoke about their son during the sentencing hearing.

This conviction serves as a reminder that justice will be served in cases of violence and that the legal system will work tirelessly to ensure the safety and well-being of the community.
