Authorities have recently made arrests in a murder case that dates back two years. The victim, a 93-year-old great-great grandmother named Dora Jordan, passed away in October 2021 after being left alone on her bedroom floor without food or water. According to a statement from the Haralson County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO), her granddaughter, Angela Nicole Patton, and Patton’s boyfriend, David Glyn Smith, have been arrested and charged with murder and cruelty to a person age 65 or older.

The HCSO provided an update on the case after Newsweek reached out for comment. As of now, it is unclear whether Patton or Smith have obtained legal representation.

The incident came to light in September 2021 when HCSO Sheriff Stacy Williams responded to a welfare check at Jordan’s residence. Upon entering the home, Sheriff Williams heard a faint cry for help and discovered the elderly woman in a weak condition on her bedroom floor. Jordan had fallen and had been without food or water for a significant period of time. She was immediately transported to the hospital for medical attention.

Patton and Smith returned home the following evening and were taken into custody on charges of cruelty. Tragically, Jordan passed away on October 27, 2021, just one month after being found alone on the floor. In March 2022, the Georgia Bureau of Investigations Medical Examiner’s Office deemed her death a homicide, leading to the reopening of the case. After an extensive investigation, the evidence was presented to the Haralson County Grand Jury on December 4, 2023, resulting in the indictment of Patton and Smith.

Sheriff Williams expressed his shock and dismay at the mistreatment of an elderly person, particularly a grandparent. He stated, “This case shocked the consciousness of so many citizens when we made the original arrest. Good people don’t understand how anyone could mistreat an elderly person, much less a grandparent. This case became even worse when Mrs. Jordan passed away from this treatment.”

Patton and Smith were apprehended around 2 a.m. on Saturday when they were found hiding in a shed on a property in Floyd County. Despite their refusal to cooperate, law enforcement obtained a search warrant and successfully took the couple into custody. Currently, they are being held without bond in Haralson County Jail.

Jordan’s obituary reflects her love for cross-stitching, oil painting, and reading. She was also an avid fan of the Atlanta Braves, who were in the midst of the World Series at the time of her passing.
