KVUE Senior Reporter Tony Plohetski has confirmed that APD Officer Daniel Sanchez has been charged with deadly conduct in relation to the death of tech entrepreneur Rajan Moonesinghe in November 2022.

On November 15, 2022, police responded to Moonesinghe’s residence after receiving a 911 call reporting a man standing outside with a rifle, pointing it at his own home.

Upon arriving at the scene around 12:30 a.m., Officers Sanchez and Stephen Market located the man, later identified as 33-year-old Moonesinghe. According to the police, Sanchez instructed Moonesinghe to drop the firearm. However, body camera footage released by APD showed Sanchez firing his department-approved weapon at Moonesinghe immediately after giving the command, causing him to fall to the ground.

Markert also gave Moonesinghe a verbal command to show his hands, but there was no response. Officer Luis Brito arrived at the scene, and all three officers approached Moonesinghe on the front porch and initiated life-saving measures.

Moonesinghe was transported to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Following Moonesinghe’s death, his family members and other advocates have publicly called for increased police accountability, emphasizing the need for reform.

Sanchez has been employed by APD for nearly three years, as reported by KVUE’s media partners, the Austin American-Statesman. He was placed on administrative leave following the shooting.
