Ontario Provincial Police reported that a tragic accident occurred on Tuesday afternoon at a rural intersection southwest of London, resulting in one fatality.

According to authorities, emergency response teams were dispatched to the junction of Thames Road and Parkhouse Drive in Southwest Middlesex, close to Glencoe, at approximately 4 p.m. The collision involved an SUV and a pickup truck.

Tragically, the driver of the SUV, a 63-year-old resident of Southwest Middlesex, sustained life-threatening injuries and was rushed to the hospital. Unfortunately, the individual succumbed to their injuries, as confirmed by the police.

The driver of the pickup truck, fortunately, emerged from the incident unharmed.

Following the accident, the intersection was closed for several hours for investigation purposes. However, it has since reopened. As of Tuesday night, the police reported that the investigation into the crash was still ongoing.

London Police Cleared of Wrongdoing in In-Custody Drug Overdose

The Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has exonerated a London police officer from any wrongdoing in the case of a 35-year-old man who suffered a drug overdose while in police custody.

The arrest took place on August 20 after reports of a break-in. The man was transported to the police headquarters, where he informed officers that he had consumed fentanyl earlier that day. A subsequent search of his backpack revealed the presence of fentanyl, according to the SIU’s recently released report.

The man was then placed in a cell and monitored every 20 minutes. However, approximately two hours later, he was discovered unconscious. Emergency medical assistance was provided until paramedics arrived, and he was subsequently transported to the hospital.

SIU director Joseph Martino stated that the individual should have been taken directly to the hospital or subjected to more frequent monitoring while in custody, given the officers’ knowledge of his fentanyl use. However, Martino noted that the man appeared coherent and in control at the time of booking.

Martino concluded that the officer did not commit any criminal offenses in relation to the man’s overdose.

Fentanyl, an incredibly potent substance up to 100 times stronger than morphine, has been linked to numerous fatal overdoses throughout Southwestern Ontario in recent years.
