25-Year-Old Man from Red Earth Cree Nation Dies Following Altercation with Police

A tragic incident unfolded on Tuesday as a 25-year-old man from Red Earth Cree Nation lost his life after a confrontation with the Carrot River RCMP. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of December 19, involved shots being fired and an altercation between the man and the officers.

The Carrot River RCMP responded promptly to a report of shots fired on Red Earth Cree Nation at approximately 3:40 a.m. The officers arrived at the scene and apprehended two individuals for questioning in connection with the incident. However, no charges have been filed against them at this time, and the investigation regarding their involvement is still ongoing.

Meanwhile, the police officers discovered a third person, identified as a 25-year-old man, in close proximity to the scene. As the police approached, shots were fired at their patrol vehicles. In response, the officers exited their vehicles, leading to a physical altercation with the man. During the confrontation, shots were exchanged, resulting in injuries to both the man and one of the responding officers.

Tragically, the man succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS. The officer’s injuries, fortunately, were determined to be non-life threatening.

In accordance with The Police Act, 1990, the Saskatchewan RCMP promptly notified the Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT). SIRT will conduct an independent investigation into the interaction between the Saskatchewan RCMP and the deceased individual, as well as the circumstances surrounding his death.
