Arrest Made in Macomb First Degree Murder Case

Macomb First Degree Murder Case

MACOMB, Ill. (WGEM) – In a significant development, the Illinois State Police (ISP) Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) Zone 4 has announced the arrest of 40-year-old Timothy L. Smith from Macomb. Smith is charged with first-degree murder, a class M felony, in connection with a tragic incident that occurred at the McDonough County Jail in Macomb.

According to the authorities, the investigation began on November 8 when agents from the ISP DCI Zone 4 were called upon by the McDonough County Sheriff’s Office to conduct a death investigation at the county jail. The victim, 51-year-old Darrell J. Hocker, was found deceased following an altercation with his cellmate, Timothy L. Smith.

After a thorough investigation, including the review of surveillance camera footage and multiple interviews, the ISP DCI identified Smith as the primary suspect in Hocker’s death. Subsequently, the case was presented to the McDonough County State’s Attorney’s Office, leading to the filing of two counts of first-degree murder against Smith.

At present, Smith is already incarcerated at the McDonough County Jail on unrelated charges. He is awaiting his first court appearance for the newly filed murder charges, which is tentatively scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, as confirmed by McDonough County State’s Attorney Matthew Kwacala.

Background and Related Incidents

This recent incident adds to a series of unfortunate events involving Smith. In February earlier this year, he was allegedly involved in a domestic dispute and animal cruelty case, as reported by WGEM.

The McDonough County inmate’s death during an in-custody altercation back in November 2023 has raised concerns about the safety and security within the county jail. The incident sparked a renewed debate on the need for improved protocols and measures to prevent such tragedies.

These incidents highlight the ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies, like the Illinois State Police, to address criminal activities and uphold public safety in Macomb and the surrounding areas.
