Reyes’ mother, struggling to hold back tears, addressed Ramirez directly, saying, “Richard Ramirez, the day you killed my son, we will never forget that day. You broke my heart into pieces.” The impact of the loss was evident in the courtroom, as Reyes’ sister shared the devastating impact on their family, including his two children, aged 15 and 8, who will grow up without their father.

Expressing remorse, Ramirez offered an apology to Reyes’ family and expressed his hope that one day they could find it in their hearts to forgive him. His defense attorney, Amanda Keller, acknowledged his regret and explained that Ramirez’s decision to plead guilty was motivated by a desire to spare everyone involved from a lengthy trial.

Judge John Fairgrieve, acknowledging the pain and grief endured by Reyes’ family, thanked them for their powerful statements before delivering the agreed-upon mid-range sentence.

Avoidable Tragedy Leads to Fatal Crash

The fatal T-bone crash occurred on July 27, 2022, at the intersection of South Andresen Road and MacArthur Boulevard in Vancouver. Vancouver police responded to the scene following reports of a collision involving a Toyota Prius and a Chevrolet Silverado.

According to witnesses, the Prius, driven by Richard Reyes, was traveling north on Andresen Road after stopping at the four-way stop with flashing red signals at the intersection. On the other hand, Ramirez, behind the wheel of the Silverado, was heading west on MacArthur Boulevard. Tragically, Ramirez failed to stop at the intersection, resulting in a devastating collision with the passenger’s side of the Prius.

The force of the impact was so severe that it launched the Prius across the intersection, causing extensive damage to the entire passenger side of the vehicle. Both vehicles caught fire shortly after the collision, further intensifying the tragedy.

Recklessness and Intoxication Contribute to Fatality

As investigators arrived at the scene, they noticed signs indicating that Ramirez was under the influence. He displayed bloodshot eyes, the odor of alcohol on his breath, and slurred speech. Subsequently, Ramirez admitted to consuming hard seltzers before getting behind the wheel, according to court records.

Following the collision, Ramirez was taken to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center for evaluation. Court records revealed that he suffered a cracked sternum as a result of the crash. While Ramirez’s injuries were serious, they pale in comparison to the loss and devastation experienced by Reyes’ loved ones.
