Remains found in the Savannah River identified as the soldier who tragically jumped to his death on Sunday, December 3, 2023

Remains discovered in the Savannah River have now been positively identified as belonging to the soldier who tragically took his own life by jumping from the Talmadge Bridge on Sunday, December 3, 2023. Fort Stewart Hunter Army Airfield has released a statement confirming the victim’s identity as one of their soldiers. Christopher Fletcher, the Director of Public Affairs for Fort Stewart, stated, “The Savannah Police Department has confirmed that the remains found in the Savannah River on Wednesday belong to Spc. Estephan Nielsen, the soldier who tragically jumped from the Talmadge Bridge on December 3rd.” Col. Ryan Sullivan, the commander of the 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division, expressed his deepest condolences, saying, “We are profoundly saddened by the loss of Spc. Nielsen, and we extend our sincerest sympathies to his family and friends. He was an invaluable member of our unit, and we are working tirelessly to provide support to his family and our team during this incredibly difficult time.” The Georgia Bureau of Investigation also confirmed Estephan Nielsen’s identity according to the Savannah Police Department. The incident on the bridge occurred at approximately 6 p.m. on December 3rd, leading to an extensive search by rescue personnel for the soldier. Last Wednesday, the remains were discovered by the Savannah Police and Port Authority Police. Estephan Nielsen joined the Army in March 2017 and served as a motor transport operator. He had recently returned from a rotational deployment to Europe and had been awarded the Army Achievement Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. Remains found in the Savannah River have been identified as the soldier who tragically jumped to his death on Sunday, December 3, 2023. Fort Stewart Hunter Army Airfield issued a news release identifying the victim as one of its soldiers.

“The Savannah Police Department identified remains found in the Savannah River on Wednesday as Spc. Estephan Nielsen, the soldier who jumped from the Talmadge Bridge on Dec 3,” said Christopher Fletcher, director of public affairs for Fort Stewart.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Spc. Nielsen, and we offer our sincerest condolences to his family and friends,” said Col. Ryan Sullivan, commander of the 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division. “He was a valuable member of our unit, and we are working tirelessly to provide support to his family and members of our team during this difficult time.” According to Savannah Police, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation confirmed the identity as Estephan Nielsen.

Savannah Police responded to an incident on the bridge at around 6 p.m. on Dec 3. Nielsen ultimately jumped from the bridge, and rescue personnel searched for the soldier. His remains were found by Savannah Police and Port Authority Police last Wednesday.

According to the Army, Nielsen joined the branch in March 2017 and served as a motor transport operator. His accolades include the Army Achievement Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. He recently returned from a rotational deployment to Europe.
