The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office recently released a report detailing several incidents that occurred in the area.
Driver Arrested for Using Cell Phone While Driving
On December 13th, Deputy Chris Haag observed a motorist violating state law by using his cell phone while driving on Daniells Bridge Road. Deputy Haag conducted a traffic stop and discovered that the driver did not have a valid driver’s license. As a result, the driver was taken into custody and charged with being an unlicensed driver and distracted driving.
Shoplifter Escapes After Confrontation at Walmart
Sergeant Samuel Masters responded to a call at Walmart on December 1st, where a woman was seen putting various items into a backpack without paying for them. When a loss prevention officer confronted her, she fled the scene in a silver Honda car. Despite their efforts, the authorities were unable to obtain the woman’s license plate number.
Property Damage Reported on Wellington Drive
Deputy Robert Perrin investigated a case of property damage on Wellington Drive in Bogart on December 5th. A 31-year-old man from Winder reported that his work vehicle had been vandalized. The truck had scratches, a cracked headlight, a damaged tool box, a dented trailer, and a lawn mower tire had been cut. The incident is currently under investigation.

Deputies Bring Holiday Cheer to Oconee County Schools
In a heartwarming display, Oconee County deputies dressed as holiday characters and directed traffic at local schools. The deputies delighted students and brought smiles to their faces. The event was covered in more detail in a separate news article.
Shoplifters Target American Eagle at the Oconee Connector
Deputy Jonathan Strum responded to an incident at American Eagle on December 6th. Two women entered the store and began collecting various clothing items without paying for them. When an employee approached them, the women quickly fled the scene. If identified, they will face felony shoplifting charges.
Stolen Purse Leads to Arrest of Suspect
Deputy Annessa Glenn was dispatched to Athens Academy on Spartan Lane on December 6th, where a woman reported her vehicle had been broken into and her purse had been stolen. The victim received a text notification that one of her stolen credit cards was being used at Walmart. Deputy Baer Schiffer went to Walmart and was able to identify a suspect from the failed attempt to use the stolen card. The suspect, a 33-year-old man from Loganville, was later arrested by police in the city of Monroe.
Mother Arrested for Leaving Child in Unlocked Car
On December 7th, Deputy Daniel Ellis was called to Walmart after a child was found alone inside an unlocked car in the parking lot. The child’s mother had left him in the car while she went inside to buy him some juice. The Department of Family and Children’s Services was notified, and the mother, a 26-year-old woman from Athens, was taken into custody on charges of reckless conduct.
Shoplifters Apprehended at Walmart
Deputy Joshua Warren responded to a shoplifting incident at Walmart on December 8th. Two women attempted to steal merchandise valued at $653 by skip-scanning items at the checkout. One of the women was taken into custody, while the other, who had a small child with her, was allowed to leave but will also face charges.
DUI Crash on the Athens Perimeter
Sergeant Pat Holl investigated a crash on the Athens Perimeter on December 17th. A 2015 Chrysler 200 had crashed into the barrier fence, causing significant damage to both the car and six barrier posts. Sergeant Daniel Ellis arrived to assist and charged the 21-year-old driver from Bishop with DUI and failing to maintain a lane.
Driver Arrested for DUI After Flipping Car
Deputy Baer Schiffer responded to a single-vehicle accident on Highway 316 near Virgil Langford Road early in the morning on December 17th. A witness reported seeing a 2021 Volkswagen fishtail before the driver lost control, causing the car to flip onto its top. The driver, a 42-year-old woman from Monroe, was located at a nearby Quik Trip station and arrested for DUI. She was later taken to a hospital for observation due to the extent of the crash.
Man Arrested for Shoplifting at Home Depot
Cpl. Quinton NeSmith and Deputy Dustin Mines apprehended a man who attempted to steal a reciprocating saw from Home Depot on December 14th. The 34-year-old man from Athens fled the scene but was captured by Deputy Mines.
Arrest Made for Prowling and Drug Possession
Deputy Doug Mattocks responded to a report of a suspicious individual at Home Depot in the early hours of December 14th. The 58-year-old man from Augusta was observed looking into vehicle windows and pulling on door handles. When confronted, he claimed to be searching for a female friend and denied any wrongdoing. However, a background check revealed that he had a felony warrant in Clarke County. During the arrest, the man resisted, and a search revealed that he was in possession of methamphetamine and marijuana.
