Tragic Incident Unfolds as Nine-Year-Old Girl Abducted, Raped, and Killed in Delhi

Delhi horror: Nine-year-old girl abducted, raped, killed, body dumped into canal

New Delhi, 19th December (IANS) – In a heart-wrenching incident that has shaken the nation, a nine-year-old girl from north Delhi was brutally abducted, raped, and later killed. The perpetrator callously dumped her lifeless body into a nearby canal. Police authorities confirmed on Tuesday that the accused has been apprehended, bringing some solace to the grieving family.

The incident came to light after the victim’s family reported the kidnapping at Swaroop Nagar police station on the evening of 12th December. An FIR was promptly registered under Section 363 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), and a thorough investigation was launched.

According to police officials, the girl’s parents are employed as laborers in a local factory and reside in a rented accommodation. As the search for their missing daughter continued, CCTV footage was scrutinized to aid the investigation. The footage ultimately helped identify the accused as Sanjeev Rana, a 52-year-old resident of Nangli Poona.

However, when the police team arrived to apprehend Rana, they discovered that he had been admitted to a hospital in Rohini following a severe traffic accident on 15th December. Due to his critical condition, he was deemed unfit to provide a statement at the time, as confirmed by a senior police official.

Subsequent investigations revealed that the girl had willingly entered Rana’s vehicle from a street near her home on 12th December around 2 p.m. Rana, who regained his ability to make a statement on 17th December, confessed to abducting and killing the girl on the same day. As per his initial confession, he discarded the victim’s body in the Munak canal, leaving the authorities with the grim task of locating it.

Following Rana’s admission, the FIR was updated with additional sections of the IPC and the POCSO Act. Once discharged from the hospital, Rana was placed under arrest, and an intensive search for the victim’s body was initiated.

Since 17th December, a team of five divers has been deployed to scour the depths of the canal in search of the girl’s remains. The authorities have also formed teams to meticulously retrace Rana’s travel route on 12th December, utilizing technical surveillance methods.

Meanwhile, the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) has taken note of this distressing incident and has issued a notice to the Delhi Police, demanding comprehensive details of the case.

“It has come to our attention that the landlord of the victim’s family is allegedly responsible for the abduction, rape, and murder of the minor girl. The accused is believed to have disposed of her body in the Munak canal. This is an extremely grave matter,” stated the DCW in its notice, urging the police to provide the requested information by Friday.
