Russell and Morgan-Weiland were tragically killed on the night of December 8, 2023. Ten days later, police arrested 25-year-old Brandon Kenny in connection with their murders. Now, as Kenny prepares for his first court appearance, recently filed court documents reveal significant details about the timeline and circumstances surrounding the killings.

According to the Spokane Police Department (SPD), officers responded to a reported shooting just after 11 p.m. on December 8. The shooting occurred near Cleveland Ave. and Cuba St. in northeast Spokane. Upon arrival, police discovered Russell’s body in the driver’s seat of a silver Dodge Caravan, while Morgan-Weiland’s body was found on the ground near Cuba St. and Grace Ave.

The Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office determined that Russell died from a gunshot wound, while Morgan-Weiland sustained over 50 stab wounds, as stated in the court documents.

During the initial investigation, police obtained security camera footage from a nearby home. The footage captured the suspect, later identified as Brandon Kenny, approaching the silver van from the south at approximately 11:01 p.m. Glass from the driver’s side of the van fell onto the road, presumably from gunfire. Kenny and another man were seen at the rear of the van before returning to the passenger side.

At 11:02 p.m., Kenny was observed running to the east before returning to the van. A minute later, Morgan-Weiland appeared in the footage, seemingly running away from Kenny. Surveillance video from another house showed Kenny and the unknown man walking westbound on Cleveland Ave. at 11:05 p.m., approximately three minutes after the shooting was reported. Kenny made a phone call before handing the phone to the other man.

The following morning, officers learned from an SPD detective that Morgan-Weiland and Russell were both suspects in the disappearance of another woman. While speculation arose that the murders might be retaliation for the missing woman, this connection has not been officially confirmed.

On December 14, police raided a house on Fairview Avenue and detained several individuals present in the home. One of Kenny’s friends identified him in the surveillance video, according to the court documents.

During questioning by investigators, Kenny confessed to both killings. He stated that he visited Russell’s house and found him crying on the couch. Russell allegedly revealed that he accidentally killed the missing woman and threatened to harm Kenny unless he assisted in moving her body.

Kenny admitted to helping move the woman’s body and later met up with Russell, Morgan-Weiland, and another man on the night of the shooting. Russell expressed concerns that he might go to the police and discuss the missing woman. It was at this point that Kenny decided to kill Russell.

Kenny shot Russell six times and proceeded to stab Morgan-Weiland over 50 times, as disclosed in the court records. According to Kenny, he killed Morgan-Weiland because she also possessed knowledge of the situation.

Currently, Kenny is being held on a $1 million bond and is scheduled to make his first court appearance on Tuesday afternoon.
