The tragic incident occurred at approximately 10 p.m. on Monday night, at the 246.9-kilometer mark of the northbound lanes in Zhushan Township. According to the freeway police, a car driven by a 43-year-old man surnamed Shih (施) crashed into a guardrail dividing the northbound and southbound lanes, flipping over and obstructing parts of the inside and middle lanes of the three-lane highway.

Shortly after, a 63-year-old man surnamed Yen (顏) collided with the overturned vehicle as he was unable to evade it in time, stated the freeway police, who conducted an overnight investigation to determine the cause of the accident.

The impact caused the woman inside the flipped car, identified as Shih’s wife, to be ejected onto the road. Tragically, she was then struck by three passing vehicles and died immediately at the scene, according to the freeway police.

In the meantime, both Shih and their young child, who were trapped inside the car, suffered severe injuries during the crash and experienced out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA), the freeway police revealed.

Regrettably, both Shih and their daughter were pronounced dead at Chu Shang Show Chwan Hospital and Nantou Hospital, respectively.

Rescue teams later discovered that Yen sustained minor injuries, while the woman occupying the passenger seat of his vehicle suffered severe injuries, as reported by the Nantou County Fire Bureau.

Notably, traffic on the freeway did not fully return to normal until 11:59 p.m. on Monday, following the necessary clearance and investigation conducted by the authorities, informed the freeway police.

Upon being notified about the accident, the Nantou County Fire Bureau dispatched six emergency vehicles, including four ambulances, to the scene. Paramedics declared the woman who had been thrown from the car dead, while Shih and his daughter were found to be in OHCA, as disclosed by the bureau.

Freeway police confirmed that the three individuals who tragically lost their lives were members of the same family and resided in Gukeng Township, Yunlin County.

The seriously injured woman, identified as Wu (吳) and aged 60, who was traveling in the silver car, was transferred from Chu Shang Show Chwan Hospital to a Taichung hospital for further treatment. On the other hand, the driver was discharged from the hospital where he received care, police authorities stated.
