Shoplifting Incident Leads to Fatal Crash

The series of events began at approximately 10:28 p.m. on Monday when officers responded to a call at Dick’s Sporting Goods on Auto Park Way. The store had reported a man and two women shoplifting merchandise. As officers arrived at the scene, the suspects hurriedly entered a pickup truck and fled, prompting a pursuit by the Escondido police.

The chase continued east through Escondido, with the driver attempting to make a high-speed turn onto Fig Street from Washington Avenue. However, the driver lost control of the vehicle during the maneuver and collided with a retaining wall, resulting in a devastating crash.

Tragic Consequences and Witnesses’ Testimony

As a result of the collision, both female passengers were ejected from the pickup truck. Tragically, one of the women succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead after being rushed to a nearby hospital. The second woman, who managed to survive the crash, underwent surgery and is expected to recover.

According to the surviving woman’s account provided to investigating officers, she repeatedly requested the driver to pull over during the pursuit, but her pleas went unanswered. The driver, later identified as John Eugene Brand, refused to let her out of the vehicle, leading to a terrifying ordeal for the women involved.

To respect the privacy of the deceased and injured individuals, their identities have been withheld until their families are notified of the tragic incident.

Arrest and Charges

After fleeing the crash scene, Brand was apprehended by law enforcement officers. He was found hiding just a block away from the collision site. Brand was subsequently taken into custody and transported to the Vista Detention Facility.

The Escondido Police Department has charged Brand with multiple offenses, including vehicular manslaughter, kidnapping, evading police, hit and run resulting in death or injury, burglary, and conspiracy. It is worth noting that the pickup truck Brand was driving belonged to the U.S. Marine Corps.

During their investigation, officers recovered stolen articles of clothing from the truck, further implicating Brand in the shoplifting incident.
