BYRON CENTER, Mich. – A tragic incident unfolded in Byron Township on Tuesday morning when a 42-year-old Kentwood man lost his life in a car fire. The Kent County Sheriff’s Office reported that witnesses heard an explosion just before 8 a.m. as a Jeep was traveling eastbound on 68th Street near Clay Avenue.

Upon hearing the explosion, deputies and the Cutlerville Fire Department were immediately dispatched to the scene. They discovered the Jeep engulfed in flames upon their arrival.

Tragically, first responders found the lifeless body of the driver inside the burning vehicle. The victim was identified as a 42-year-old Kentwood man, although his name has not been released to the public at this time.

Authorities are now actively investigating the incident, with the Kent County Sheriff’s Office, Cutlerville Fire Department, Michigan State Police, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives working together to determine the cause and origin of the fire.

At this stage, it remains unclear what led to the explosion and subsequent fire. Investigators are diligently working to gather evidence and piece together the sequence of events that resulted in this tragic loss of life.
