HARVEY COUNTY — A tragic incident unfolded in Harvey County, Kansas, as authorities investigate a shooting that claimed the life of 74-year-old Peggy Altum. The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday morning at a residence on Terrace Drive in Newton.

Following a distress call, local law enforcement swiftly responded to the scene at approximately 2 a.m. According to a media release from the Newton Police Department, officers arrived at the 2000 block of Terrace Drive. Upon their arrival, they encountered 70-year-old Edward Altum, who reported that his wife had been shot. Edward Altum, seemingly distraught, declined to provide any further information at that time.
Medical Assistance and Arrest
Emergency Medical Services (EMS) were immediately dispatched to the location and quickly transported Peggy Altum to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. Despite their efforts, she tragically succumbed to her injuries over the weekend.
Meanwhile, the police took swift action and apprehended Edward Altum, the victim’s husband, as a suspect in the shooting. He was subsequently placed under arrest and has since been held in custody.

As the investigation progressed, authorities have now requested updated charges against Edward Altum. The initial charge of first-degree murder has been upgraded based on new evidence or developments in the case. The accused remains incarcerated as the legal proceedings continue.
