“El Paso County Sheriff Deputy Mark Carle Justified in Use of Force in Officer-Involved Shooting in Security, Colorado”

Accident – Death – Obituary News : SECURITY, Colo. — The Fourth Judicial District Attorney’s Office has released its verdict on a police-involved shooting incident that occurred in February. According to the DA’s Office, El Paso County Sheriff Deputy Mark Carle was deemed justified in his use of physical force while responding to a shots fired call that escalated at a residence on 66 Easy Street in Security. This response resulted in a prolonged standoff in the area.

On the day of the shooting, the sheriff’s office received a distress call just before 2:30 p.m. regarding a felony menacing incident in the 60th block of Easy Street. Within minutes, the call was upgraded to a shots fired situation. The caller reported that her uncle, identified as 52-year-old Robert Wood, had brandished a firearm and threatened her and her family while they were inside their house. She further stated that Wood had fired the weapon as they were fleeing. Additionally, the caller mentioned that Wood was under the influence of methamphetamine at the time.

Upon the deputies’ arrival, Wood repeatedly exited and re-entered his house, eventually firing shots at them. Deputy Carle, after taking strategic positions, moved forward to confront Wood upon hearing gunfire directed at another deputy who had taken cover. Deputy Carle observed Wood blowing smoke from the back door of the residence while wearing blue jeans. In response, the deputy discharged five rounds, targeting Wood’s torso and legs. One of the bullets struck Wood in the knee.

Following the shooting, Wood retreated inside his home, leading to several hours of standoff before law enforcement deployed gas within the building. They then entered and discovered Wood with a gunshot wound to the leg. Wood received medical treatment at UCHealth-Memorial Central Hospital.

Subsequently, Wood pleaded guilty to menacing charges and has been sentenced to three years in prison under the jurisdiction of the Department of Corrections.
