Dramatic Police Bodycam Video Shows Deadly Gunfight at San Diego Grocery Store

San Diego, United Kingdom – Newly released police bodycam footage reveals a harrowing and fatal gun battle between law enforcement officers and a suspect at a popular supermarket in Southern California. The incident, which unfolded on December 7, 2023, left the suspect dead and a brave San Diego police sergeant fighting for his life after sustaining a gunshot wound to the head.

The intense confrontation occurred at a Ralphs supermarket, bustling with shoppers who were caught in the crossfire. The police were summoned to the scene following a distress call made by a woman who reported her stolen vehicle, taken by someone she knew after a domestic violence incident. She had spotted the car in the supermarket’s parking lot but refrained from approaching the suspect due to his armed status.

The suspect, identified as 46-year-old Curtis Harris, was not only wanted for the car theft but was also slated to be served with an emergency court protective order. As several officers entered the store to confront Harris, he made a desperate dash towards the exit. However, an officer attempted to intercept him, leading to a chaotic chase.

Harris skillfully maneuvered through a maze of shopping carts, brandishing his firearm before vaulting over a low wall. He then unleashed a hail of bullets at close range, targeting Sgt. Anthony Elliot, who was tragically struck in the head. Undeterred, the remaining officers pursued Harris outside, where he continued to shoot at them.

In an act of self-defense, the officers returned fire, ultimately incapacitating Harris and bringing an end to the life-threatening situation. However, amidst the chaos, the officers soon noticed that their sergeant was missing, prompting them to rush to his aid. They discovered Sgt. Elliot lying injured on the ground.

San Diego Police Chief David Nisleit commended the officers for their bravery in the face of extreme danger. He stated, “This was an extremely perilous situation, with multiple rounds being fired at our officers. The officers displayed exceptional professionalism and courage tonight. However, we have a sergeant currently in the hospital, which deeply affects me.”

Despite being shot at close range, Sgt. Elliot continues to fight for his life in the hospital, determined to recover from the severe injury he sustained while protecting the public.
