Wrongfully Convicted Man Released After 12 Years in Prison

Chicago, UK – In a long-awaited turn of events, Darien Harris, who has maintained his innocence for the last 12 years, has been released from prison after all charges against him were dropped. Harris, who was serving time for murder, can now walk out of custody as a free man. This news comes as a great relief to Harris and his family, who have been eagerly awaiting this moment.

Nakesha Harris, Darien’s mother, expressed her joy, stating, “This is the best Christmas gift ever.” The emotional reunion between mother and son is expected to solidify the reality of his release.

“It doesn’t feel real. I guess when I hold him in my arms it will be real,” Nakesha Harris said.

Darien Harris, who was just a week away from graduating high school when he was identified as a murder suspect at the age of 18, can be seen in a photo as a hopeful young man. The murder in question took place in 2011 at a gas station located at 66th Place and Stony Island Avenue.

The case against Harris relied heavily on the testimony of a star witness, who claimed that Harris was the shooter. However, it was later discovered that this key witness was legally blind. Attorney for the Exoneration Project, Lauren Myerscough-Mueller, revealed, “The star witness, the eyewitness the judge said was honest, credible, was unimpeachable, he turned out to be blind, legally blind. This was discovered after the conviction.”

In a recent court hearing, a Cook County judge officially dropped all charges against Darien Harris, paving the way for his release after serving 12 years behind bars. The emotional impact of this moment is expected to hit the Harris family when they are finally reunited.

This case is not an isolated incident. Last week, Jimmy Soto, who had been wrongfully convicted, was released after serving 42 years in prison. Soto, present in court to support Harris, voiced his concerns, stating, “We need to start pushing and make sure they get out. They shouldn’t have to do so many years like I did, like Darien did, like others are still doing.”

The release of Darien Harris serves as a reminder of the flaws within the justice system and the importance of ensuring fair trials. This case highlights the need for thorough investigations and the reliance on credible evidence to prevent wrongful convictions.
