The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office Coroner’s Division has officially identified the body discovered during the search for Scott Graves, a 63-year-old resident of Island Mountain, as that of the missing man. The identification was made through dental comparisons conducted by a Forensic Odontologist. Graves had gone missing earlier this month under unusual circumstances, triggering a widespread search operation involving multiple agencies and volunteers.

Background of the Disappearance

Graves was last heard from on December 4, 2023, when he informed his family about unsafe road conditions on his property, situated off Island Mountain Road in Piercy, California. Concerns grew when he failed to make any subsequent contact. On December 7, a family member who visited his property discovered Graves’ locked truck with his dog inside, along with his wallet, but there was no sign of Graves himself.

Search and rescue teams were swiftly deployed, meticulously combing through the challenging terrain of Island Mountain. Despite the exhaustive efforts, including the utilization of helicopters and potentially drones, there was no initial trace of Graves.

In a press release issued today, the Coroner’s Division and Sheriff’s Detectives confirmed that investigations are ongoing to determine the manner, cause, and circumstances of Graves’ death. They urge anyone with information that could aid in this investigation to contact the Sheriff’s Office Tip-Line at 707-234-2100 or the WeTip Anonymous Crime Reporting Hotline at 800-782-7463.

Scott’s wife, Stacy Graves, expressed gratitude to all the search and rescue personnel involved, stating, “Please extend our heartfelt thanks to all the search and rescue teams from the Graves family. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.”

We wholeheartedly echo her sentiments and extend our gratitude to the dedicated individuals who tirelessly devote their time and effort to these search operations. They are the unsung heroes who contribute to making the world a better place.
