Mumbai Man’s Body Found in Septic Tank of Municipal Toilet

Mumbai: The body of a 45-year-old man, identified as Yang Bahaddur Gaha, was discovered in the septic tank of a municipal toilet in Mahatma Kabir Nagar Slum in Vile Parle East on Monday. The victim’s wife had filed a missing persons complaint with the Vile Parle police on December 15.

Local residents have alleged that the incident occurred due to a lapse on the part of the local civic authorities. However, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) denies the allegations. Local activist, advocate Godfrey Pimenta, has written a letter to the chief minister, stating, “It has come to our attention that a serious lapse on the part of a contractor, in collaboration with the ward officials, has led to this unfortunate incident. The victim’s body was discovered today in a highly decomposed state. The incident is deeply distressing, and a thorough investigation must be conducted promptly.”

The BMC, on the other hand, claims that the concerned toilet was built by the BMC and handed over to a local community-based organization (CBO) for maintenance. The CBO, however, stopped working as the individuals responsible for maintaining the toilet refused to provide monthly expenses. The toilet has an underground water tank with a steel cover. It is believed that the deceased person attempted to open the cover to access water and accidentally fell into the tank.

This incident has raised concerns about the maintenance and safety of municipal toilets in slum areas. The local authorities must ensure that proper checks and balances are in place to prevent such tragic incidents from occurring in the future.
