DNA Technology Helps Identify Human Remains Found 25 Years Ago in Mayfield, Kentucky

Mayfield, Kentucky – Kentucky State Police in Mayfield have successfully identified human remains that were discovered almost 25 years ago, thanks to the utilization of advanced DNA technology. The remains were initially found in May 1999 in Lake Barkley, Lyon County, Kentucky, and have remained unidentified until now.

A Mysterious Discovery

On May 6, 1999, two fishermen stumbled upon the human remains in Lake Barkley. The body, wrapped in heavy tire chains and accompanied by a hydraulic jack, posed a perplexing puzzle for investigators. The Search for Answers

Fast forward to 2016, when the decision was made to exhume the remains in hopes of uncovering crucial information. Despite extensive efforts, including DNA technology, dental examinations, and other forensic testing, the identity of the individual remained a mystery. The case was subsequently cataloged as “UP# 75” in the National Missing and Unidentified Person System (NAMUS).
