Meerut, Uttar Pradesh – In a heart-wrenching incident, a 19-year-old student identified as Shashi Ranjan Kumar allegedly died by suicide by jumping from the roof of his hostel building. The incident occurred on Monday at the Subharti University hostel in Meerut. Shashi, a first-year BCA student hailing from Bihar, was immediately rushed to the nearby Subharti Hospital. Unfortunately, despite the medical team’s efforts, he succumbed to his injuries on Monday.

The local police were called to the scene, and although no suicide note was discovered from Shashi’s room, authorities suspect a love affair to be the motive behind this extreme step. The body has been sent for an autopsy, and the family of the deceased has been informed about the tragic incident, according to Station House Officer (SHO) Prajant Tyagi.

This unfortunate incident follows another student suicide case that took place on Saturday at MIT College in Partapur Bypass. Shivam, a second-year B.Tech student from Bihar, was found hanging from the fan in his room. Such incidents highlight the need for increased mental health support and awareness among students.

In a separate incident, a 22-year-old student from the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi allegedly attempted suicide by jumping in front of a Metro train at Tilak Nagar Metro Station. Thankfully, due to the quick response of the vigilant metro driver who applied the emergency brake, the student narrowly escaped the tragic fate. However, this incident caused a disruption in train services for around 10 minutes.

Investigation Ongoing

Authorities are currently examining the CCTV footage to determine whether the student intentionally tried to end their life or whether it was a case of accidental fall. The police are leaving no stone unturned in their pursuit of the truth.

It is essential that such incidents spark conversations about mental health and the support systems available for students. Educational institutions must prioritize mental well-being, providing counseling services and creating an environment where students feel comfortable seeking help.
