Small Plane Crash in Independence, Oregon Claims Three Lives

INDEPENDENCE, Ore. (AP) — A tragic incident occurred in Independence, Oregon, late Saturday afternoon when a small plane crashed into power lines, resulting in the unfortunate demise of the pilot and two passengers onboard. The Independence Police Department confirmed the incident after receiving a report of the single-engine plane crash around 4:55 p.m., as stated in their social media post.

The pilot has been identified as 35-year-old Mohammad Hussain Musawi from Independence, along with two passengers, 35-year-old Mohammad Bashir Safdari and 29-year-old Ali Jan Ferdawsi, both residents of Independence and Salem, Oregon, respectively.

Fortunately, the airplane’s owner was not present during the incident, and there were no additional passengers on board, according to the police authorities.

“Our entire department mourns with you during this time,” expressed Independence Chief Robert Mason. “My heart goes out to the deceased and the pain their families are experiencing,” he added, offering his condolences to the grieving families.

According to an updated statement by the police on Sunday, the ill-fated plane was en route from McMinnville, Oregon, to the Independence State Airport, traversing through heavy fog. The collision with electrical power lines during this challenging weather condition led to a small brush fire and a subsequent power outage in the community, located approximately 12 miles (19.3 kilometers) southwest of Salem.

As a result of the crash, Pacific Power reported a power loss affecting at least 375 customers in Independence on Saturday, causing inconvenience to the local residents, as reported by the Statesman Journal.

Authorities from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have initiated investigations into the incident. The Independence police are providing necessary assistance to these agencies in determining the cause behind this tragic accident, which is yet to be disclosed.
