At least three individuals lost their lives in separate incidents of elephant attacks in Bargarh and Mayurbhanj districts on Sunday. The victims were trampled to death by a tusker in two different locations.
In Bargarh, Siblal Suna (50) from Kathaumal under Gaesilet block and Balram Sahu (25) from Bishipali in Bheden were fatally attacked by the elephant in the morning hours. The first incident occurred when Siblal was answering nature’s call at Jharniatikra at around 6:30 am. The tusker later moved towards Bishipali and attacked Balram while he was harvesting paddy in his field at around 9:30 am. Both victims succumbed to their injuries on the spot. Rajendra Gochhayat, Assistant Conservator of Forests (ACF) of Bargarh, stated that the tusker had strayed from a herd and entered the villages. It is believed that the tusker originated from the Dhama forest range in Sambalpur.
Meanwhile, in the Betnoti range of Mayurbhanj, a 45-year-old tribal man named Krushna Singh from Kesura village, within Baisinga police limits, was also trampled to death by a tusker. According to Krushna’s wife, Laxmi, her husband had gone to the nearby forest to relieve himself early in the morning when he was attacked by the elephant. Range officer Monwar Khan and Baisinga police reached the site upon receiving the information. Krushna’s body was sent for postmortem examination, and an unnatural death case has been registered.
These unfortunate incidents serve as a reminder of the growing human-elephant conflict in the region. Authorities must take necessary measures to protect both the local communities and the elephants, ensuring their peaceful coexistence.
