SAN DIEGO POLICE RELEASE BODYCAM FOOTAGE OF OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING IN 4S RANCH GROCERY STORE INCIDENT

San Diego, United States – The San Diego Police Department (SDPD) has just released the bodycam footage of a recent officer-involved shooting that took place at a grocery store in the 4S Ranch area. The incident resulted in the death of the suspect and a critical injury to a sergeant. The release of the footage aims to provide transparency and assist in the ongoing investigation into the incident.

The Shooting Incident

The shooting occurred late at night on December 7, at the 4S Commons Town Center. SDPD officers were responding to reports of a stolen vehicle in the shopping center and had received information that the suspect was inside the Ralphs store.

The newly released bodycam footage shows three officers entering the store to confront the suspect, while another officer and a sergeant waited outside. As the officers called out the suspect’s name, he fled the store, and the sergeant attempted to apprehend him.

From the sergeant’s bodycam, it is evident that the suspect ran into the shopping cart corral before drawing his gun. He then jumped over a concrete wall, turned around, and fired at the ducking sergeant. Another officer’s point of view captured the suspect aiming and shooting at the sergeant before targeting additional officers. In response, three officers returned fire, ultimately incapacitating the suspect.

Medical Aid and Identifications

Both the injured sergeant, identified as Sgt. Anthony Elliott, and the suspect, Curtis Harris, received immediate medical attention at the scene before being transported to the hospital. Unfortunately, Curtis Harris succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Sgt. Anthony Elliott underwent emergency surgery for the gunshot wound to his head and is currently receiving ongoing medical care for his critical injuries, as reported by the SDPD.

Prior Criminal History

Investigations have revealed that Curtis Harris was not only a suspect in a vehicle theft case but was also the subject of an unserved emergency protective order and wanted in connection to a domestic abuse case. These factors may have contributed to the suspect’s actions during the incident.

Ongoing Investigation

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department is currently leading the investigation into this officer-involved shooting. They will examine all available evidence, including the bodycam footage, witness statements, and any other relevant information, to establish a clear sequence of events and determine whether the officers’ actions were justified.

Fundraiser for Sgt. Elliott

In response to the shooting incident, the Peace Officers Research Association of California has organized a fundraiser to support Sgt. Anthony Elliott and his family. The fundraiser aims to provide financial assistance during his recovery period. As of now, the initiative has already raised more than $32,000.
