The incident occurred on December 7th when officers responded to reports of a stolen vehicle in the parking lot of a 4S Ranch shopping center. The video begins with a 911 call from the victim, who reported her car being stolen by 46-year-old Curtis Harris. It is important to note that Harris had an unserved Emergency Protection Order against him related to a prior domestic violence incident.

Upon locating the stolen vehicle, officers found a woman sleeping in the passenger seat. They then proceeded to enter the store to search for Harris. The bodycam footage shows Harris running out of the store and drawing his gun, shooting San Diego Police Sergeant Anthony Elliott in the head at point-blank range. He then proceeded to shoot at other officers, prompting them to return fire, striking Harris multiple times.

The footage also captured the moment officers discovered Sgt. Elliot in the shopping cart corral with a gunshot wound to the head. Officers provided immediate medical aid to the sergeant until paramedics arrived. Sgt. Elliot was taken to the hospital in critical condition but was conscious and speaking during transportation.

Officers were able to secure Harris’s gun using a ballistic shield and placed him in handcuffs while providing medical assistance. Unfortunately, Harris succumbed to his injuries later that night at the hospital. A loaded gun and a second loaded magazine were recovered at the scene.
