Philadelphia Police Arrest Man for Series of Knife Attacks in Pennypack Park

Suspect Faces Charges of Attempted Murder, Aggravated Assault, and More

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Philadelphia authorities have apprehended Elias Diaz, a 46-year-old man, in connection with a string of violent knife attacks that occurred in Pennypack Park. Diaz was taken into custody on December 17 and is now facing charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault, and other related offenses.

The disturbing incidents unfolded along the picturesque Pennypack Trail in Northeast Philadelphia, sending shockwaves through the community.

Trail Attacks: Dates, Locations, and Details

The first assault took place at approximately 8:15 a.m. on November 22 in the vicinity of 2800 Holme Ave. According to the Philadelphia Police, the victim, who was jogging on the trail, approached a bicyclist from behind. As the runner announced his presence, the bicyclist, later identified as Elias Diaz, became inexplicably enraged.

Without warning, Diaz brandished a large knife, possibly a machete, and viciously slashed the unsuspecting runner multiple times on his arms and hands. The victim, in need of immediate medical attention, was rushed to Nazareth Hospital for treatment.

The second attack occurred two days later, on November 24, around 9 a.m. A pedestrian walking along the trail near 2800 Winchester Avenue was targeted by a knife-wielding bicyclist. The victim sustained cuts on his right arm and hands and was promptly treated at Jefferson-Torresdale Hospital.

Additional Encounter and Community Concerns

On December 6, a witness came forward to report an unsettling encounter with an individual matching Diaz’s description on the Pennypack Trail. The incident allegedly took place on November 25 at approximately 8:30 a.m. The witness described the assailant as a man riding a black BMX-style bicycle who exhibited signs of agitation and verbal aggression. Fortunately, the witness managed to escape unharmed.

These distressing knife attacks have left the residents of Northeast Philadelphia on edge, prompting concerns about trail safety and personal security.
