A former member of the Portland Trail Blazers has been charged with murder following the discovery of the remains of a missing woman near Las Vegas, police said on Sunday.

Chance Comanche, 27, who previously played for the Stockton Kings of the G League, was arrested on an unspecified felony charge by the FBI in Sacramento County, California, where he was based. The Sacramento Kings’ affiliate team released him from his contract upon his arrest.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department released a news statement on Sunday afternoon, revealing the charges against Comanche in relation to the death of 23-year-old Marayna Rodgers. Rodgers’ remains were found in Henderson, Nevada. She was last seen in the Las Vegas area on December 6, the night before the Stockton Kings played against the G League Ignite in Henderson. Rodgers, a medical assistant, was visiting from Washington state with her friends.

Sakari Harnden, 19, a friend of Rodgers and Comanche’s girlfriend, has also been charged with murder. Initially taken into custody on Wednesday, Harnden was booked into a Las Vegas jail on charges of kidnapping.

Rodgers was reported missing on December 7 and, following the arrests, police were able to recover her remains, which were subsequently identified by the Clark County coroner. Detectives determined that Harnden and Comanche were responsible for her murder.

Comanche’s extradition to Nevada is currently pending. The former basketball player, who stands at 6-foot-10, played two seasons of college basketball at Arizona before entering the 2017 NBA Draft, where he went undrafted. He made his NBA debut with the Trail Blazers on April 9, 2023, scoring seven points in 21 minutes. This season, Comanche played 13 games for the Stockton Kings, averaging 14.0 points and 7.0 rebounds.

As the investigation continues, the basketball community and fans await further updates on this shocking development.
