Tragedy Strikes as Explosion and Inferno Engulf Guinea’s Main Fuel Depot in Conakry

CONAKRY, Guinea (AP) — In a devastating incident that has sent shockwaves across Guinea, an explosion and subsequent inferno at the country’s primary fuel depot in the capital city of Conakry have claimed the lives of at least 13 individuals and left 178 injured, according to authorities. As Guinea grapples with this catastrophic event, the international community has stepped in to offer assistance in managing the aftermath.

The colossal explosion, which occurred after midnight on Sunday, originated at the Guinean Petroleum Company depot, engulfing the surrounding area in flames. This tragic incident has caused extensive damage in the heart of the Kaloum administrative district, which houses numerous government offices.

Out of the 178 individuals injured, 89 have already received medical treatment and have been discharged, as confirmed by the government in a recent statement. Additionally, the casualty count has been revised, revealing that among the 13 fatalities, foreigners were also tragically included.

Authorities have commenced an investigation to determine the cause of the explosion at the depot, which serves as the primary supplier for Guinea’s fuel requirements. It is worth noting that the depot had been undergoing relocation to a remote location, aiming to prevent such calamities in the future.

One of the major concerns arising from this incident is the potential disruption in fuel supply, as Guinea heavily relies on imported refined petroleum products.

The government, in its statement, has stated that it is currently identifying critical fuel-related needs to mitigate the risk of supply disruptions from the capital to other parts of the country.

An employee at the depot, identified as Ahmed Condé, shared his harrowing experience with the Conakry-based Guinee Matin news website, stating that the explosion occurred during a ship offloading. Condé deeply lamented the loss of several friends in the fire and highlighted the destruction of all offices and equipment at the site.

Security Minister Bachir Diallo, speaking on state television, assured the public that the fire has been contained. Furthermore, countries such as Senegal and Mali have pledged to send medical and safety teams to assist in the aftermath.

The fire ravaged numerous offices and buildings, prompting many residents to flee their homes as thick smoke engulfed the area.

Resident Mounatou Baldé recounted the terrifying moment, saying, “I was sleeping when I heard a whistle, then a deafening explosion.”

In response to the incident, authorities have closed schools and public spaces in the capital. Access to the affected district has been restricted, except for essential services. The presidency has urged citizens to stay at home during this time.

Colonel Mamadi Doumbouya, who assumed the role of interim president following a coup in 2021, assured the public that the state is providing comprehensive care for those injured. He also called upon the people of Guinea to display solidarity and offer prayers during this difficult period.
