Tragic Crash on Richmond San Rafael Bridge Claims Life of 19-Year-Old San Rafael Resident

SAN RAFAEL, CA – In a devastating incident on Sunday evening, a fatal crash occurred on the Richmond San Rafael Bridge, resulting in the loss of 19-year-old Darolyn Alejandra Reyes Rodas, a resident of San Rafael. The Marin County Coroner’s Division has confirmed the identity of the victim.

The tragic accident took place around 8 p.m. when a silver Honda sedan, headed westbound on I-580 at the midspan of the bridge, collided with a white Mazda SUV traveling in the same direction. The collision caused extensive damage and prompted a swift response from the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

In order to preserve crucial evidence and conduct a thorough investigation, CHP officers promptly closed the freeway for several hours. Tragically, Reyes Rodas, who was a passenger in the Honda, succumbed to her injuries at the crash site, as confirmed by the attending fire department personnel.

The Honda’s driver, who sustained major injuries, was immediately transported to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention. Fortunately, the occupants of the Mazda remained unharmed during the collision.

Law enforcement officials are still working to determine the exact cause of the accident. However, the CHP has clarified that impairment was not a contributing factor. Preliminary reports indicate that the Honda was reportedly traveling at an excessive speed while attempting a lane change, leading to the collision with the slower-moving Mazda.

As a result of the impact, Reyes Rodas suffered multiple traumatic injuries and was found unconscious and unresponsive inside the vehicle. Prompt action from bystanders who witnessed the crash involved pulling her from the wreckage and performing CPR until the arrival of paramedics.

Shortly after 8 p.m., paramedics arrived at the scene and, based on their assessment, pronounced Reyes Rodas deceased. Roger Fielding, the chief deputy coroner for Marin County, revealed that a forensic postmortem examination, along with routine toxicology testing, is scheduled for completion later this week.

The California Highway Patrol – Marin Office, in collaboration with the Marin County Sheriff’s Office – Coroner Division, is actively investigating the cause and manner of this tragic incident. As a result, information regarding the circumstances surrounding Reyes Rodas’ death will be released following the conclusion of these thorough investigations.

The Marin County Sheriff’s Office and personnel of the Coroner Division extend their deepest sympathies to the grieving family and friends of Ms. Reyes Rodas during this incredibly difficult time.
