According to a report by the Indiana State Police (ISP), the accident occurred when Baylor’s 2003 Chevy Suburban SUV veered off the road and collided with a tree. Tragically, Baylor died instantly upon impact. The incident took place while Baylor was traveling west on S.R. 62.

The preliminary investigation conducted by the ISP indicates that the tragic chain of events began around 7:30 p.m. on that fateful evening. Trooper Nathan Newton, who was patrolling eastbound on S.R. 62, witnessed Baylor driving northbound on Water Street. Newton observed Baylor’s vehicle blatantly disregard the stop sign at the intersection of S.R. 62 and Water Street in downtown Corydon. The blue 2003 Chevy Suburban SUV did not slow down as it crossed the highway, posing a dangerous situation.

Reacting swiftly, Trooper Newton activated his police lights and turned onto Water Street in an attempt to initiate a traffic stop. However, Baylor executed a sudden U-turn on the road, passing by Newton before heading west on S.R. 62. Determined to bring the vehicle to a halt, Newton turned his vehicle around, activated his siren, and pursued the SUV westward.

Unfortunately, before Trooper Newton could catch up to Baylor, tragedy struck. Near the intersection of Woodland Avenue, the Suburban abruptly veered off the right side of the road. The driver’s side of the vehicle collided with a sturdy tree, leading to Baylor being forcefully ejected from the SUV. Tragically, she succumbed to her injuries at the scene.

Assisting the ISP troopers in the response and investigation were the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department, Corydon Police Department, Harrison Township Fire Department, and Harrison County Hospital EMS.

The investigation is still ongoing, and authorities have announced that an autopsy will be performed to shed more light on the circumstances surrounding the crash. Early indications suggest that alcohol may have been a contributing factor in this tragic accident.

This unfortunate incident serves as a somber reminder of the importance of responsible and cautious driving. It is crucial for all motorists to obey traffic laws and regulations, ensuring the safety of themselves and others on the road. The loss of Sierra Rose Baylor’s life is a poignant reminder of the consequences that can arise from reckless behavior behind the wheel.
