A tragic incident unfolded on State Road 62 in Corydon as a 27-year-old woman from Corydon lost her life in a single-vehicle crash while allegedly attempting to evade the police. The Indiana State Police (ISP) released a statement providing details about the unfortunate incident.
According to the authorities, the driver, identified as Sierra Rose Baylor, was driving a 2003 Chevy Suburban SUV when the accident occurred. Tragically, Baylor suffered fatal injuries upon impact when her vehicle veered off the road and collided with a tree while traveling west on S.R. 62.

As per the initial investigation conducted by ISP, the incident took place just prior to 7:30 p.m. on Saturday evening. Trooper Nathan Newton was travelling eastbound on S.R. 62 when he noticed Baylor’s vehicle heading northbound on Water Street. Reportedly, the vehicle blatantly ignored the stop sign at the intersection of S.R. 62 and Water Street in downtown Corydon. The blue 2003 Chevy Suburban SUV failed to slow down, proceeding through the intersection without stopping.
Upon observing this violation, Trooper Newton activated his police lights and turned onto Water Street to initiate a traffic stop. However, as Newton made the turn, Baylor swiftly executed a U-turn in the roadway, passing by the trooper’s vehicle before heading west on S.R. 62. In response, Newton promptly turned his vehicle around, switched on the siren, and began pursuing the SUV, aiming to bring it to a halt.
Unfortunately, before Trooper Newton could catch up to the fleeing vehicle, it veered off the right side of the road near the Woodland Avenue intersection. Colliding with a tree on the driver’s side, the impact caused Baylor to be ejected from the Suburban. Tragically, she succumbed to her injuries at the scene of the accident.
Emergency medical services, along with other first responders, including the Harrison County Coroner’s Office, swiftly arrived at the scene. The Sellersburg Post crash reconstruction team was also called upon to investigate the incident. Assisting the ISP troopers in the response and subsequent inquiry were the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department, Corydon Police Department, Harrison Township Fire Department, and Harrison County Hospital EMS.
In light of the ongoing investigation, an autopsy will be performed to shed further light on the circumstances surrounding the crash. Authorities suspect that alcohol may have been a contributing factor to the accident.
