Kolkata police made a tragic discovery on Monday, December 18, when they recovered a body hanging from one of the galleries at the iconic Eden Gardens Stadium. The deceased has been identified as Dhananjay Barik, the son of a member of the ground staff. The body was found by one of the caretakers in gallery-K’s upper tier.

The investigation into the incident, led by a senior police official, has revealed that Dhananjay may have been suffering from depression due to not being appointed as a ground staff at the Eden Gardens, unlike his father and uncle who are employed there.

“The deceased was possibly suffering from depression because he was not getting an appointment as a ground staff at the Eden Gardens like his father and uncle, who are also employed there. We are investigating whether it is a case of suicide or something else. The body has been sent for post-mortem,” the officer said according to PTI.

It was reported that the family of the deceased had filed a missing complaint at Maidan Police Station on Sunday, December 17.

This unfortunate incident is not the first time Eden Gardens has made headlines for a tragic event. In August, a fire broke out in the false ceiling of the players’ dressing room during renovation work for the ODI World Cup. The fire resulted in the burning of several pieces of playing equipment.

During the ODI World Cup, Eden Gardens hosted five fixtures, including the second semi-final match between Australia and South Africa. The match witnessed a sold-out crowd as Pat Cummins’ Australia defeated Temba Bavuma’s South Africa by three wickets to advance into the summit clash of the tournament.
