Man jailed for burglary and theft from vulnerable elderly man in Farnborough

Benjamin Norris, a 36-year-old resident of Queensmead, Farnborough, was sentenced to 40 months in prison on Friday, December 15 for burglary and theft from a vulnerable elderly man. Norris gained entry to the victim’s address on Vine Street on Wednesday, June 7, pretending to be his carer.

Once inside the home, Norris stole various valuable items including the victim’s savers account passbook, bank information, credit cards, and pension details. The incident was reported to the authorities, who launched an investigation. Fingerprints recovered from the crime scene were later matched to Norris, leading to his arrest.

During the trial at Winchester Crown Court, Norris denied the charges of burglary and theft. However, the evidence against him was strong, and he was subsequently convicted. Alongside the burglary charges, Norris was also found in possession of a controlled drug of Class B, resulting in additional charges.

Detective Constable Matt McCarthy, from the Northern Area Crime Team, expressed his concern over the targeting of vulnerable elderly individuals by criminals like Norris. The victim in this case suffers from vascular dementia, making him particularly susceptible to exploitation. McCarthy emphasized that justice would be pursued vigorously for such crimes, sending a clear message to distraction burglars and those preying on elderly or vulnerable people.
