“The suspect, identified as MA, aged 35, hailing from Myanmar, is a refugee from Camp 1 Block H-88 Kutupalum, a Rohingya ethnic shelter in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh,” stated Police Senior Superintendent Fahmi Irwan Ramli, Chief of Banda Aceh Sub-Regional City Police, on Monday (18/12/23).

According to Fahmi Irwan Ramli, MA is among 137 Rohingya individuals who recently arrived in Aceh and are currently being accommodated in the underground parking area of the Balai Meseuraya Aceh (BMA) in Banda Aceh.

Upon their arrival, MA and another individual, identified as AH, separated from the group. However, local residents apprehended both suspects and handed them over to the local police station.

“Based on the initial examination of both individuals, there is strong suspicion that they are involved in the alleged TPPO related to the relocation of Rohingya ethnic residents from the Cox’s Bazar refugee camp in Bangladesh to the territory of Indonesia,” Fahmi Irwan Ramli explained.

During the investigation, MA confessed to enticing Rohingya residents to leave Cox’s Bazar for Indonesia. He charged them 100,000 to 120,000 taka each, equivalent to approximately Rp14-16 million. His responsibilities included captaining the boat and coordinating with witnesses AH and HB.

The police have questioned 12 Rohingya witnesses and seized several pieces of evidence, including a ship named “Nazma” and two mobile phones.

This arrest sheds light on the ongoing plight of Rohingya refugees and the challenges they face in their journey to find safety and stability. Human trafficking remains a significant concern, and efforts to combat this illegal activity must be intensified.

The Banda Aceh Sub-Regional City Police, along with other relevant authorities, are committed to thoroughly investigating this case and bringing the perpetrators to justice. The cooperation between local residents and law enforcement highlights the importance of community vigilance in combating human trafficking.

As the investigation progresses, it is crucial to ensure the safety and well-being of the Rohingya refugees who have arrived in Aceh. Adequate support and assistance should be provided to help them rebuild their lives and integrate into society.

The arrest of MA serves as a reminder of the need for increased international cooperation to address the root causes of the Rohingya crisis and find sustainable solutions for the displaced Rohingya population.
