According to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office, the victim has been identified as Antonio Deandre Benson, a 28-year-old resident of Birmingham.

The shooting took place at approximately 2:51 a.m. on Saturday in the 700 block of 29th Street.

Off-duty officers who were working at nearby clubs immediately alerted the police dispatchers about the gunfire.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald stated that one of the officers crossed the street from the clubs and discovered a person who had been shot near a food truck. In addition, they found another man wounded in close proximity to the food truck.

Tragically, Antonio Deandre Benson was pronounced dead at the scene by the Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service at 3:02 a.m. The other individual was immediately transported to UAB Hospital with critical injuries.

Preliminary investigation suggests that the victims were engaged in a heated argument with another group of men, which ultimately escalated into a physical altercation and subsequently culminated in an exchange of gunfire.

Officer Fitzgerald stated, “We believe that both parties involved fired shots at each other. The two victims were together during the incident.”

Fortunately, no bystanders sustained any injuries; however, another food truck was struck by bullets during the shootout.

Officer Fitzgerald mentioned that all those involved in the incident appeared to be acquainted with one another. Although the exact number of shots fired remains unknown, it is suspected to be in double digits.

“We had a large crowd present at the scene, which demonstrates the senselessness of the situation,” Officer Fitzgerald stated. “An officer informed me that there were numerous individuals enjoying themselves.”

At this time, no arrests have been made in connection with the incident.

Authorities encourage anyone with information related to the shooting to contact the Birmingham homicide detectives at 205-254-1764 or provide anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
