Man killed in Severe Storm in Massachusetts

A tragic incident occurred during a powerful storm in Massachusetts on Monday, resulting in the death of a man when a tree collapsed onto his trailer amidst strong wind gusts and heavy rainfall. The storm has caused widespread destruction, uprooting trees and power lines, leading to power outages across the state. Particularly affected is the South Shore in Plymouth County, where the fatal incident took place.

The Hanover Police received an emergency call at approximately 9:47 a.m. reporting the collapse of a large tree outside the workplace located at 99 Industrial Way. The caller informed the police that the fallen tree had trapped a man inside a small travel trailer.

Without delay, Hanover first responders swiftly freed the man from the trailer. Unfortunately, he had sustained severe head injuries and was immediately transported to South Shore Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The victim has been identified as 89-year-old Robert Horky, a resident of Hingham.

The Massachusetts State Police, assigned to the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office, are currently conducting an investigation into the incident to determine further details and any potential factors contributing to the accident.

The storm’s impact is evident in the widespread power outages reported across the Bay State on Monday afternoon, according to the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency tracker. Over 270,000 power outages were recorded, with approximately 50% of Hanover experiencing darkness.

The South Shore and coastal areas were hit the hardest, with nearly 100% of Scituate being left without power as of 3 p.m. on Monday.

Eversource President of Regional Electric Operations, Craig Hallstrom, acknowledged the unfortunate timing of the storm, coinciding with people’s desire to enjoy their time off or prepare for the upcoming Christmas holiday. Hallstrom explained, “The fierce winds and heavy rains brought down trees and limbs, causing significant damage to the electric system and resulting in widespread power outages across most of Eastern Massachusetts, as well as communities in Western Massachusetts.”

Efforts to restore power are underway, with hundreds of crews working tirelessly. However, due to the extensive scope of the outages and the ongoing damage caused by the storm, restoration may take time. Hallstrom emphasized, “We are bringing additional contract crews to support our restoration effort, and our dedicated employees are committed to working around-the-clock until all customers affected by this storm have their power restored.”

As the investigation continues and restoration efforts persist, the community mourns the loss of Robert Horky and hopes for a swift recovery from the devastation caused by the severe storm.
