Tragedy Strikes Chicago’s Largest Migrant Shelter: 5-Year-Old Boy Pronounced Dead

CHICAGO — In a heartbreaking incident, a 5-year-old boy was found unresponsive at the city’s largest migrant shelter on Sunday afternoon and was later pronounced dead at Comer Children’s Hospital. Chicago police have initiated a death investigation.

Emergency Response

According to initial reports, Chicago Fire Department paramedics were called to the shelter located at 2241 South Halsted around 3:15 p.m. when the young boy went into cardiac arrest. Despite their efforts, he could not be revived and was rushed to the hospital where he tragically passed away.

Investigation Underway

The Chicago Police Department has dispatched its evidence technicians to examine the bathroom where the boy was found. The cause of the child’s death remains unknown, and authorities are working diligently to gather all the necessary information.

Migrant Shelter Details

Last week, the six-story warehouse-turned-housing complex, located at 2241 South Halsted, was home to approximately 2,300 individuals, according to the city’s migrant housing dashboard. The shelter, designed to provide temporary housing for migrants, offers support and resources to those seeking refuge in the city.
