Employee Dies and Another Injured in Hippopotamus Attack at Lucknow Zoo

A tragic incident occurred at Nawab Wajid Ali Shah Zoological Garden, popularly known as Lucknow zoo, when a 40-year-old employee lost his life and another was injured during a hippopotamus attack while cleaning its cage on Monday morning.

The hippopotamus had recently been relocated from Kanpur to the Lucknow zoo.

The deceased, identified as Suraj, had been working on a contractual basis at the Lucknow Zoo for over ten years. The injured employee, Raju, is currently receiving treatment at a hospital, and his condition is stable.

Suraj and Raju entered the hippopotamus’ cage for cleaning duties on Monday morning. Unfortunately, the animal attacked them during their work. Raju managed to escape from the cage.

Zoo director Aditi Sharma stated that an inquiry into the incident is underway. She emphasized that all employees must confine the animal to a specific area of the cage before entering.

“As part of the investigation, we will determine why the animal was not confined to a specific section of the cage when the two employees entered,” said Sharma.

Suraj leaves behind his wife and two children, a daughter and a son.
