Man Robs ATM in Delhi to Pay for Father’s Cancer Treatment
A 30-year-old man resorted to robbing an ATM in the New Ashok Nagar area of Delhi in a desperate attempt to pay off his father’s mounting debt from cancer treatment and other expenses. The incident came to light when the Delhi Police received a PCR call on December 16 about a theft at the Axis Bank ATM in Old Kondli.

Upon receiving the call, a police team promptly rushed to the scene and discovered a man inside the ATM cabin with tools such as an electric cutter and screwdriver. The accused, identified as Shyam and a resident of Sunil Dairy in Ghazipur, was apprehended by the officers.
Investigations revealed that Shyam originally hails from Mainpuri in Uttar Pradesh and had moved to Delhi seven to eight years ago. Initially working as a taxi driver, Shyam was forced to sell his vehicle after his father was diagnosed with cancer.
“Shyam has accumulated a debt of Rs 7 to 8 lakh, which he borrowed for his father’s medical treatment, his own wedding, and purchasing the car. His father is currently undergoing treatment and requires additional funds,” stated a police officer.
Achin Garg, Additional DCP (East), disclosed that Shyam was previously found in possession of an abandoned carton containing an electric cutting machine, two spare blades, and a screwdriver at a bus stand in Mayur Vihar, Phase-3, around 15 to 20 days ago. Garg further mentioned that Shyam has completed his education up to Class 5 and now drives an e-rickshaw.

“Due to his overwhelming debt and inability to meet basic necessities, Shyam decided to target the Axis Bank ATM at Kondli using an electric cutting machine in an attempt to carry out the theft,” explained Garg.
The incident sheds light on the financial hardships faced by individuals in dire circumstances, leading them to resort to drastic measures. It serves as a reminder of the need for accessible and affordable healthcare options, particularly for critical illnesses like cancer.
Efforts must be made to alleviate the burden of medical expenses on families, ensuring that necessary treatments are within reach without pushing individuals to the brink of desperation.
